Facts about the Belarusian language:
The Belarusian language is spoken today by about 7.9 million people, it is the mother tongue of the Belarusians. The majority of users of the language live in Belarus, where it is one of the official languages. However, a significant Belarusian-speaking minority lives in Białystok, in Poland.
The Belarusian language is, along with the Russian and Ukrainian languages, one of the Eastern Slavic languages, which in the middle ages emerged from a common Slavic language root.
In 1933 a spelling reform forced the Belarusian language closer to the Russian language; the vocabulary and the grammar also came under strong Russian influence. The Belarusian language was reestablished and reconstructed only at the time of perestroika: in 1990 Belarusian was declared the official language of the Belarusian SSR, and from 1991, the independent Republic of Belarus’ official language, but the language of Soviet era, the “narkamauka” (наркамаўка) dialect still exists alongside the pre-1933 version.
Today's Belarusian written language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and the font usually corresponds to the Russian and the Ukrainian languages’ letters.
