Facts about the Turkish language:

• There are 61 million Turkish-speaking people in the world, of whom some 51.8 million live in Turkey. Furthermore, the Turkish language is spoken in Bulgaria (810,000), Iraq (380,000), Greece (300,000), Cyprus (175,000), Macedonia (100,000) and Romania (30,000), as well.
• The number of Turkish-speaking people is estimated at 1.5 million in Germany, and at 2-3 million in the European Union. Some sources estimate the number of Turks is higher by a few million.
• After the establishment of the Turkish Republic, Ataturk introduced radical reforms in all areas. One of these was the renewal of the Ottoman Turkish language. The head of state entrusted foreign and local scholars with the creation of a new Turkish language. In the process, the almost incomprehensible grammar that evolved over centuries was simplified, while the language was cleared of Arab and Persian loan-words. The scholars attempted to replace the lost words with original Turkish words, and when that proved impossible, borrowed words from French. With the introduction of the Latin alphabet in 1928, its mastery was mandated for all, and the use of Arabic script was forbidden.
