The majority of native-language Slavic speakers, about 145 million, speak Russian. An additional 110 million people speak it as a second language.
In relation to its spatial expanse, the dialectical fragmentation of Russian is relatively small, and the written language is based on Central Russian dialects around Moscow.
Russian is widespread in scientific and cultural contacts as well.
Russian writing uses the Cyrillic alphabet.
